The 100G QSFP28 (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable 28) transceiver is the industry-standard solution for high-density 100 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. It operates using four independent transmit and receive channels, each capable of 25Gbps operation to achieve an aggregate bandwidth of 100Gbps. Unlike earlier 100G form factors like the CFP or CFP2, the QSFP28 features a significantly smaller footprint and lower power consumption, typically under 3.5W. By utilizing NRZ (Non-Return to Zero) modulation, these modules offer a mature and highly reliable method for high-speed data transmission, making them the most widely adopted interconnect for modernizing network infrastructure from 10G and 40G to 100G speeds.

Technically, the 100G QSFP28 is defined by its versatility and high port density on network switches. These modules are built in strict accordance with the SFF-8665 and QSFP28 MSA standards, ensuring universal compatibility and “hot-swappable” convenience across diverse hardware platforms. They support a wide range of optical interfaces, including SR4 for short-reach multimode fiber and LR4, CWDM4, or PSM4 for long-reach single-mode applications. Each module includes integrated Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), allowing for real-time tracking of critical operating parameters such as optical output power, receiver sensitivity, and temperature, which is essential for maintaining the health of complex fiber links.
