400G OSFP
The 400G OSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceiver is a high-performance optical module engineered to support the rigorous bandwidth demands of next-generation 400 Gigabit Ethernet. Operating with an eight-lane electrical interface where each lane delivers 50Gbps via PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level) technology, the OSFP module achieves a total throughput of 400Gbps. Unlike more compact form factors, the OSFP is designed with a slightly larger footprint to integrate advanced thermal management features directly into the module. This architectural choice allows the transceiver to handle higher power envelopes—up to 15W or more—ensuring stable performance even as data centers transition toward 800G and 1.6T future-proofing.
The defining technical advantage of the 400G OSFP lies in its superior heat dissipation and electrical integrity. Many OSFP modules feature an integrated finned heat sink on the top surface, which leverages the system’s airflow to maintain optimal operating temperatures in high-density rack environments. These transceivers are compliant with the OSFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) and support a wide array of optical reaches, from short-range multi-mode fiber (SR8) to long-haul single-mode fiber (DR4, FR4, and LR4). Additionally, they include comprehensive Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM), providing network administrators with critical real-time data on laser health, voltage, and temperature to prevent downtime in mission-critical infrastructures.
400G OSFP transceivers are the preferred interconnect solution for hyperscale data centers, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and AI-driven networking environments. Because of their robust thermal profile, they are frequently utilized in high-power switch architectures, such as NVIDIA InfiniBand platforms and ultra-scale cloud server farms. They play a pivotal role in Data Center Interconnect (DCI), 5G backhaul, and large-scale enterprise cores that require massive data movement for machine learning training and real-time big data analytics. By offering a reliable path for scaling from 100G to 400G and beyond, the OSFP form factor ensures that modern networks can sustain the exponential growth of global IP traffic.
