Maximizing Rack Efficiency: A Deep Dive into Our High-Density Fiber Overhaul for a Frankfurt Colocation Provider

This case study explores how we resolved critical airflow and maintenance bottlenecks for a Frankfurt-based data center during their 400G infrastructure upgrade. By deploying CPR-compliant LC Uniboot push-pull jumpers and MTP Elite trunks, we reduced cable congestion by 60% while ensuring strict adherence to European fire safety regulations.
Data Center Upgrade Case Study

Highlights

  • Space Efficiency: Achieved a 60% reduction in cable volume within vertical managers.

  • Thermal Optimization: Reduced average rack exhaust temperature by 5°C.

  • Safety Compliance: Fully met Euroclass B2ca-s1a,d0,a1 fire safety standards.

  • Future-Ready: Seamlessly transitioned from 10G to a 400G-ready

Overview

A leading Tier III Colocation Provider in Frankfurt, Germany, faced a critical infrastructure bottleneck. As they began migrating their core network to 400G to support high-frequency trading and cloud AI workloads, their existing fiber cabling reached its physical limit. The facility needed a solution that combined extreme density, strict European fire compliance, and ease of maintenance without expanding their physical footprint.

Challenges

The client’s legacy cabling system was failing under the pressure of modern hardware:

  • The “Spaghetti” Effect: Traditional 2.0mm LC Duplex zip-cord cables had created a massive “fiber wall” at the rear of the switches, obstructing critical airflow.

  • Accessibility Issues: With 144 ports per 1U, technicians could not reach the connector latches by hand, leading to accidental disconnections of adjacent live links during maintenance.

  • Regulatory Barriers: Local fire regulations demanded CPR (Construction Products Regulation) B2ca rating—a high standard that many standard offshore products fail to meet.

  • High PUE: The blocked airflow forced the cooling system to work harder, negatively impacting the data center’s Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and operational costs.

High Density Optimization Cabling

Solutions

We engineered a multi-layered connectivity ecosystem designed for the specific rigors of the European market:

  • LC Uniboot with Push-Pull Tabs:

    • Reduced Footprint: Replaced dual-zip cables with a single 2.0mm round jacket, cutting cable bulk by 50%.

    • Ergonomic Extraction: Integrated push-pull tabs allowed for safe, tool-less disconnection in ultra-tight spaces.

    • Tool-less Polarity Reversal: Enabled on-site A-to-B polarity switching without exposing the delicate fiber end-faces.

  • MTP® Elite (Low Loss) Backbone:

    • Utilized MTP-12 Elite trunks to replace individual fiber runs. One MTP trunk (4.5mm OD) replaced 12 LC fibers, instantly clearing the cable management trays.

    • Low Insertion Loss: Guaranteed a maximum of 0.35dB loss to ensure plenty of “optical budget” for future 800G upgrades.

  • Custom B2ca LSZH Jacketing:

    • All cables were manufactured using specialized Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) compounds, certified to B2ca standards to ensure maximum safety in enclosed data center environments.

Results

The transformation was immediate and measurable, turning a chaotic environment into a streamlined, high-performance facility:

  • 60% More Room: Reclaimed over half of the space in cable management trays, allowing for cleaner aesthetics and easier tracing.

  • Improved Cooling Efficiency: With the “fiber wall” removed, airflow improved significantly, resulting in a 5°C drop in average rack temperatures and lower fan power consumption.

  • Maintenance Velocity: The time required for “Moves, Adds, and Changes” (MACs) was slashed by 80% due to the push-pull tab design and pre-labeled kits.

  • Full Compliance: The facility passed its annual safety audit with zero non-conformance reports regarding cable flame-retardancy.
